The Biewer Terrier is a naturally active breed that requires regular daily exercise to work off his excess energy. If a daily walk is not possible, some active playtime will usually fulfill this dog’s needs for exercise. Without enough exercise of some form, however, this breed is likely to develop behavioral problems such as digging and chewing.

Overview

The Biewer Terrier, also called the Biewer Yorkie & Biewer Yorkshire, is a toy breed terrier who is closely related to the Yorkshire Terrier. He is a very happy, spirited and intelligent dog. Since he is a small toy breed, he can be somewhat difficult to housetrain and it takes dedication and persistence to fully housetrain him. The Biewer Terrier can be a noisy little dog, he is also high energy. He is wary of strangers and will display some nervousness when meeting new people or dogs. A fenced yard will keep him safe when he is exercising, but he should never be left out alone. Birds of prey can easily pick him up and carry him off.

History

The Biewer Terrier is believed to have started around 1984 by German Yorkshire Terrier breeders, Mr. and Mrs. Biewer. The Biewers spent several years establishing and refining breed type until the dogs bred true. The Biewer Terrier was recognized by the United Kennel Club January 1, 2016. The Biewer Terrier was introduced into mainstream America in 2003.
