The South Russian Shepherd Dog is a dog of above average size and sturdily built, with a thick, dense, double coat. The race is slim, but with a massive bone structure and musculature well developed. Secondary sex characteristics are strongly marked, with males being stronger, more massive and more courageous than females.
Body type
The body is slightly longer than tall. The chest is deep, rather broad and slightly flattened. The cross is evident but not high. The back is straight and strong. The loin is short, broad and slightly arched. The belly is moderately tucked up.
The coat is long, coarse, thick and dense, with a well developed undercoat. It is of equal length on the head, legs, chest and tail.
White, white and yellow, straw colored, ashen grey and other shades of grey, white lightly marked with grey and grey speckled.
Fierce, suspicious of strangers, and dominant in character, the South Russian Shepherd Dog is able to adapt to a wide variety of weather conditions and temperatures.
The natural gaits of this breed is the heavy trot and canter. The winds are free and extended. When running, the legs move in a straight line and tend to converge towards a center line.
